Traditional Texas Pecan Pie | This IS your Granny’s Pie Recipe

June 23, 2019 by Merry Leave a Comment

Traditional Texas Pecan Pie is the same recipe that I have used for more than 50 years. I got it from my mother, who got it from her mother, who probably got it from her mother.

Texas Pecan Pie

This IS your Granny’s Pie!

When I was growing up, Traditional Texas Pecan Pie was served at every holiday dinner.  Sure there were other pies, but there was always Pecan Pie on the table. And everyone used the same recipe. Going to Granny’s for dinner? There was the Pecan Pie! Going to a friend’s for dinner? There was the Pecan Pie! Going out to eat for Thanksgiving dinner? Well, bless your heart. Come on over to Granny’s instead and have a piece of Pecan Pie.

If you had a Southern or Texan Granny, this is the pie that you remember from all of those holiday dinners where you had to sit at the kids table – even after you graduated college! Unfortunately, someone had to either die or move out of state before there would be a vacancy at the adults table.

Pecan Pie is still a favorite and still served at most holiday dinners.

Puh-Kahn or Pee-Can?

How exactly do you pronounce “Pecan” anyway?  Texans pronounce it “Puh-Kahn”. Now if you sit down to dinner at my table, and ask for a slice of “Pee-can” pie, I will certainly cut you a nice slice and even top it with whipped cream if you like, but you will have to deal with the snickers from the kids and the smirks from the adults yourself.

Let’s Talk About The Crust

You can either buy a frozen shell from the supermarket or you can make the pie dough yourself. For simplicity, I usually use a frozen pie shell.

Let the frozen pie shell come to room temperature.  With wet fingers, press any broken pieces of shell back together.  Whether using frozen or homemade pie dough, press a nice lifted crust from the rim to make it pretty and to help get the pie ingredients from bubbling over the edge.

With your thumb and forefinger, lift up a section of the rim. With the forefinger of your other hand, push your finger in between the thumb and finger holding the crust. Then move to the next section, and push again and again and again, until you have circled the entire rim and have a very pretty crust.

Traditional Texas Pecan Pie

Traditional Texas Pecan Pie is a very easy pie to make. Here is the recipe, so jump right in and surprise your family and friends with a homemade pie.

Hi, My name is Merry. My daughters are grown and married, and have given me 7 delightful grandchildren to love and spoil. Caught on the cusp of "ready to retire" and "not able to retire just yet", with Social Security checks still looming on the horizon, and with AARP membership notices flooding my mailbox, I have my eyes turned toward the future. When retirement finally finds me, I look forward to more time with my husband of 45 years, more time with family and friends, and more time to simply celebrate a long and happy life. But no need to wait to celebrate, let's start now. Read More…
